EXCLUSIVE Interview With Ta-Ku

A little (but huge for us) chat with the Perth-based producer Ta-Ku.

Regan 'Ta-Ku' Mathews is a brilliant and rising beatmaker from Perth, Western Australia. He first caught our attention with the NYC EP and more recently, the RE ϟ TWERK EP. He has worked with, or remixed, Flume, Chet Faker, Ghost Loft, Suff Daddy and Hawk House.

Despite the huge hype around the blogosphere, he's still a very humble and down to earth person as we found out on a little telephone call with the man himself.

The following interview was conducted by our Australia correspondent (sort-of) Catarina Demony.

First of all, where does your stage name come from? What does Ta-Ku mean?
Well, I’m half Filipino and half New Zealand Maori. The Maori language has a word which is referred as “taku” and it pretty much means, in different context, depending when you use it and how you used it, “me, myself or I”. I thought it was a cool representation of your name, being  100% me..

What does inspire you to do your music? Any specific artist that inspire you?
Artist-wise..I guess most consistently would be Hudson Mowahke. I think that musically he really pushes the envelope and is always forward-thinking. J Dilla and Madlib are big favourites of mine too, a lot of their songs and music really motivate me but pretty much everything. I’m a big fan of checking Soundcloud every day so, if I hear something really really cool that inspires me aswell.

What do you think of the Australian music scene now? Do you think it's changing?
Yeah, definitely!  I think it’s really growing, I think it’s blossoming. The Australian music scene has been great underground wise for a long time, but it's only just now that Australians are starting to come out of their holes, expose themselves on the Internet and really make some noise, that’s really cool. I think the Australian scene right now is probably the best that has ever been for the music that I’m into.

And what about Perth - there’s a lot of a new talent coming out from there now. Do you think there’s something special that makes it happen?
Yeah, there is.. Perth is really laidback so, if you ever been, you know how we do it. We’re pretty relax, chill and, I don’t know, there’s no real competitive spirit here..well there is but it’s very friendly and healthy, it's not bitter, there’s no jealousy. The comunity is really great and the surroundings and the way of life it’s pretty crusie too.

We don’t know if it’s true, but we heard in another interview you gave that you have one more job...
Yeah, I’m at my job right now! I work on corporate health insurance..

How do you conciliate both jobs?
I love my job to be honest. I’ve been here for almost 5 years now, trying to climb the corporate ladder aswell as trying to make music. Having this type of job I feel it keeps you nice and balanced, keeps everything in perspective. I mean, if you have a family to provide you need that kind of security. Also, I appreciate the time I have (when I do have time) to make music. It kind of pushes me to make the best I can on a small amount of time.

So you release a lot of music and it kind of comes out like every other week. Is that a strategy or do you just love to produce?
People think it's a strategy but to be honest, i get impatient. (laughs) I just really want to share it with people you know. I'd rather have it sitting on my soundcloud than on a hard drive being unheard. I try to keep the quality as high as i can, but i just love sharing music and putting it out. It's not always been a strategy but obviously in the last year or so, people tend to like that about me so i'm blessed that people are appreciative of how much i upload.

Since you produce so much music, do you have any plans for a new LP?
Yeah, most definitely. People don't know when I'm going to be releasing a proper LP or EP but this year alone I've released…. man... I think 4 or 5 projects. What people don't know is that while I'm doing all those projects and releasing remixes, is that I'm actually closed working on a proper EP to actually release on a major label. I stay busy but i'm also pretty concentrated on my solo release which will probably be by the end of the year hopefully.

Do you have any plans for an European tour?
For sure! I'd love to go to Europe for a vacation (laughs). Just to say hello to all the people in the different countries. But most definitely. I'm sure if anyone's read interviews with me, I'm not a big performer or I do many shows, but of course, if I'm in your town you'll see me. I'd love to do an European tour. There have been many chances for me to come over this year but it just hasn't been suitable since I'm working, but hopefully soon.

Do you have any advice for upcoming beat makers?
Definitely, just use the tools we have at our finger tips - Soundcould and the social networks. Just really reach out. Don't be shy to reaching out to someone you really admire or a label that you really want to be on. If you don't try you never gonna know. Be diligent but also be respectful and don't be Too much in their face, but hustle and determination is always a good thing. It's never wrong to try to show your music to people that you'd want to hear.

Thank you so much for your time and good luck for everything.
Thank you, have a good day!

Mirage - Let's Kiss

Johnny Jewel (the man behing Chromatics and Glass Candy) shared a new Mirage's track, "Let's Kiss".

After Dark 2, the second compilation from Italians Do It Better is finnally out this friday and apparently is 78 minutes and 16 seconds long. Mirage's "Let's Kiss" is taken from the compilation and here's what Johnny Jewel had to say about the track and After Dark 2:

""Let's Kiss" was written the same week as "Under Your Spell" in November 2008. After a bizarre & beautiful twist of fate, I walked into a remote bar in Montreal where I met the love of my life. The next morning... Ida & I had to leave. We flew to France for a handful of sweaty club shows. On the train out of Paris, I realized my whole world had been permanently turned upside down. The rain was crashing against the windows... & I decided I wanted to make a record that felt like that moment frozen in time... "For Ever Ever". That's when After Dark 2 was born. The last five years have been a blur of art & parties. This record represents the people we've connected with along the way...in Moscow, in Mexico, in Barcelona, in London, in Portland, in Montreal, in Melbourne, in Houston, in Berlin, in Beijing, in Los Angeles, in Dublin, in Athens... I am so excited to finally be sharing it with you. In 20 minutes, Ida & I get on a plane to Warsaw for our first tour overseas with Chromatics. Even though she is on crutches thanks to a brutal Roller Derby pile up on Sunday... we can't wait to see all of you again... it's been way too long. After Dark 2 is out this Friday."
