ON: LORDE

Introducing Ella Yelich-O'Connor, aka LORDE, a 16 year old rising star from New Zealand.

“Every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom, blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room.“ But not this one! With only 16 years old ,Ella O’Connor a.k.a Lorde, singer and songwriter from New Zealand blazed the charts with her new project called “Love Club EP” wich contains one of her most famous hits called “Royals”.

In a couple of months the teenager digged into the music industry and blew the New Zealand Top 40 as number 1. Started like a flea in her carreer and jumped really quick to the stage of New Zealand, this girl has a distinct and very carateristic tone(timbre) that gave her the opportunity to sign with the famous and well known Universal Music.

Envolving in her pop and electronic recipe she has a connection between her vocals and her lyrics that will give you goosebumps.

Good vibes to listen by yourself or with your friends, and able to give you the perfect mood! Well, speaking as a “rookie”, the nut graf of this young talented woman is that you will probably hear a lot about her in the coming months.

Stay Tuned.

London Ear #4: in violet

On the fourth edition of London Ear...

After a long and harsh winter we were finally able to sit down by Regent's canal, and enjoy the infamous London summer weather. With us was Jake Murray - in violet’s creator and lead singer – who, in an hour-long chat, took us through all the steps necessary to achieve what he did today – launching a debut album.

(Jake Murray on the left)
To label Murray as a musician is a very short understatement. Murray is in fact an artist – someone who truly contributes and participates in the creation of art. As such, one may so find him in many different settings: from supervising the studios at one of the UK’s top educational music facilities; to catching intimate gigs at The Lexington; to writing album reviews for the website ‘Echoes and Dust’.

This mad obsession for music and its involving industry took over Jake very early on. The Wirral natural nostalgically recalls the time when he used to upload “shit loads of loops and ideas” on Soundcloud as important practice to what it was still to come. Murray then went on to study Audio Production at SAE Institute Liverpool - a critical step towards the building of his professional career, as it allowed him to develop a much wider network of professionals in the field, and most importantly, meet some key players in his personal and professional life today.

Much like the time he recorded his first EP in his basement, Jake, based in north London, has turned one of the house’s rooms into a home studio where he works on different projects. Yet, this time around it's a bit different. Yes he is still sending tracks over to Helsinki for an old classmate of his to lay some grungy drums on top; but his overall approach to this new project, 'Opal', is seeing some challenging and interesting turns. There is “a lot more vocal layering”, more friends involved, more instruments and arrangement.

JM: “…I’m looking forward to show everyone, I really am. It’s different. It’s bigger…”

Another important part of music releases is remixing – a practice that lets different people shape the same object as they see it. Murray has done several before and has just finished two more for his label mates Rumour Cubes and The Narrows. In charge of remixing Opal's single 'We're All Dying, Says Sylvia' were the electronic duo In a Sleeping Mood.

Make sure you grab in violet's debut album 'Opal' which comes out today under the label Cognitive Dissonance.

All the best to the in violet crew,

MJO.
